The March

The March

The March, directed by John Akomfrah, is a documentary that follows the buildup and behind of Martin Luther King Jr's famous march on Washington where he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. It reveals how the FBI, President John F. Kennedy's administration, and the United States government were fiercely opposed to the idea of the march on Washington, fearing it would lead to violence and riots throughout the nation's capital. It also tells the story of the eventual acceptance of the march on Washington and how they began to spread the word throughout the United States and create fundraising for the march. It also talks about how they hired huge names in Hollywood, directors, actors, and writers, to create an aura of glamor and fame about the march on Washington, so it would seem more appealing to American audiences who were hearing about it. The documentary includes many interviews from various different sources who all played a role in the march on Washington. From interviews with some of the key actors; members of the inner circles of the core organizational groups; Hollywood supporters and civil rights campaigners; John F. Kennedy administration officials; and the ordinary people who became part of the crowd of thousands, the documentary provides what it was like to make this great Civil Rights event happen. This march became the turning point for those fighting for Civil Rights in the United States and where many people secured in their mind how great of a leader and activist Martin Luther King Jr was. Thanks to this documentary, we are able to witness, firsthand, how a majority of the United States became united under the cause of Civil Rights.
